My world broke and it just made me feel like my desire to want to help people was selfish and invalid. These seemly "selfless" tendencies in reality just serve to create a sense of purpose to a person's existence. The book wasn't about this entirely, but this was my main takeaway), regardless of how altruistic they (think they) are. The main premise of HTWFAIP is that everyone just wants to feel self-important (and you basically use this principle to "design" your interaction so that you get what you want from them.
I stumbled upon the book because my sister had it lying around the house, and never thought much of it when I first started reading it, apart from the fact that I knew that this was a very popular self-help book. I know its kinda weird, but just to give some context–I grew up always thinking that I wanted to work in social impact, helping people, and making a difference (literally wrote that in every single school/scholarship application). Which book and why? I was speaking to a friend a couple months back and we both realized that the book ' How to win friends and influence people' (HTWFAIP) had triggered an existential crisis on the both of us when we were younger. Curious to know if anyone had similar experiences with any other books.
TLDR: Reading Dale Carnegie's 'How to win friends and influence people' destroyed all my ambition when I was 18.
